Clean water is fundamental to survival, but 2.1 billion people worldwide don’t have access to it. We wanted to help change this, so in 2017 Les Mills joined forces with UNICEF to help bring fresh water to communities in East Africa. The goal of the initiative, Workout for Water, was to raise funds to build as many clean water pumps as possible. We put the call out to our global Team – our team mates, our club partners and our Instructors - to champion the fundraising efforts. It costs USD$414 to build a water pump in East Africa, and just one of these pumps can bring clean, safe drinking water to an entire community.
At the heart of Workout for Water was a one-of-a-kind charity workout – a global event that took place on World Children’s Day, 18 November 2017. Global celebrity P!nk gave approval for her smash hit ‘What about us?’ to be re -imagined by the children’s group Kids United, and Les Mills matched the track to each of its group fitness ‘Workout for Water’ workouts as a focus for events on 18 November.
Workout for Water was a great success, raising $1,089, 000 USD – enough to build 1,702 water pumps.
